Splinters

I had a glimpse of how childbirth is like today. A splinter that was stuck in my thumb for 4 months came out today. And the feeling was indescribable wtf.

Life

Life as I know it will soon begin to change… not because I just started my first job or what… it’s because my dad is going to add me on fb and his profile pic is my grandma. Time to abandon fb wtf

A Generation of Inaction?

Because I am too free, nowadays I tend to fb wayyyy too often , but to console myself I try to think that I am somehow learning people’s online behavior, then I will pat myself on my back and convince that I’ve been productive, then continue my daily routine of activities that encourage the suicide of thinking cells.

One of the main things that I notice is that with all the fancy social networking sites we have now, people are getting more and more … how to say this nicely… dumb. I’m not starting a crusade against social networking or what but I can’t help but see a worrying trend in the way young people acquire information. You see, how many of us rely on people’s fb links on certain news to actually know the news? How many of us still read the newspapers everyday or be inquisitive enough to find more information regarding certain news that are happening around us?

Take for example the recent financial budget report for 2011, the news about the 100-storey tower, how many of us actually knew about it only when there’s a fb group invitation that says ‘Malaysians do not want Menara Merdeka’ or some kind of group name with teen-angst undertones? Many young people just join the group, make some stupid comment about how their lives suck and point their finger to the government, occasionally insulting things that is some what totally unrelated, then close the window and continue farming in their virtual farm wtf. I guess I am worried about how so many people didn’t bothered to find out more about the menara merdeka before starting  to criticize it. Mind you that I have not yet fully understood how the whole thing is funded, some say its not fully funded by the govt, some say indirectly lah, traffic prob la, waste of money lah. But IMO I think it’s just a forced project to some extent to fulfill Najib’s desire to leave a name in the history books. Anyway, I still think its a pretty lame project, but I won’t simply pick a side because I don’t know enough to make that decision. I personally believe we need to have this ‘thinking spirit’ when it comes to nationwide or worldwide issues, people just make decisions with their emotions and I think its a very bad trend. It makes us very vulnerable to manipulation by people who know better. sigh I hate it when my points are all over the place wtf.

Another thing I noticed on fb is that people love to criticize, be it petty issues or big issues. Look at most comment sections of news or youtube videos, people love to criticize. Or perhaps the better word here is judgmental, or condemning. Take for example the Genting Sempah bus crash, the driver apologized and people are going crazy trying to find the right person to blame. The unfortunate truth is that all these mis-managements have probably been going on right under our noses all the time, nobody complained about it yet because nothing has happened yet. The elevator that u use everyday could be poorly maintained and nobody would care, not until it suddenly breaks down one day and kill a dozen of people. And there’s also the case of the man killed by a palm-sized rock thrown from condo residents who have a nasty habit of throwing unwanted things out their apartment windows. The residents there complained about this before, but nobody cares, until the poor man is killed, then politicians suddenly burst out of no where and demand cctv lah demand security lah, demand justice lah.

I’m probably not going anywhere with all this news, I guess one of the many questions that I have is, how have we Malaysians become so morally-passive over the years? Why is it that we have this ‘tidak-apa’ attitude, and when something goes wrong we are so quick to judge? Is it just us Malaysians? Is our generation becoming a generation of no-action, talk only individuals? Are we too busy updating our twitter, our fb status, or our blogs ? We know how to complain alright (look at what I’m doing! wtf) but I wonder whether we, our generation, actually have the capacity to go out there and make a difference, I’m seriously doubting our ability to do that.
